Simply, Speak of Me As I Am is a play about men. But that’s the only simple thing about it.

The same nine guys gather every Saturday at Emmett’s Barber Shop in a Birmingham, Alabama neighborhood. There they laugh, offer political solutions, and brag on their female conquests. They can argue, recite poetry, and just be themselves without approval or disapproval from the rest of the world.

The Barber Shop is their world.

Vulnerability, normally a taboo, can exist here in their home away from home. No women are allowed. Except of course, to be admired! Emmett’s Barber Shop is their gentlemen’s club.

Nine guys, Three Saturdays, One Barber Shop in Birmingham Alabama, in 1999.

"It's insightful, it's beautiful, it's clever, it's hilarious, it's heartbreaking..."
