The Funeral

The fat black woman in her tent sized black dress, bucked, half screamed and half cried, “Aw lawdy lawdy, lawdy… Lawdy, lawdy, lawdy… lawdy lawdy…” Her mouth opening and closing like a guppy, she reached for oxygen in big gulps. Her body bucked and writhed like a mad rodeo bronco. Two men in black suits, white shirts and black ties, grabbed either side of the woman. They held onto her like bronco riders waiting for the elusive eight second count.

A beautiful, soulful voice broke into, “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me…
The Book Festival

She saw him before he saw her. The flash of adrenalin shooting through her body upset her equilibrium. Excitement pumped in her chest. Uncertainty crept through her mind. Should she? Yes? No? Duck and hide?

The old woman, talking in her ear droned on incessantly. “Blah! Blah! Blah!” the old lady continued. Oblivious, to the old woman, her eyes were glued to him.

It had been fifteen years, another life ago…
